INTRODUCTION TO MONTESSORI

This module introduces the participant to the Montessori educational structure and the Montessori Method. It also trains the participant to understand the uniqueness of this method.

The participant is also introduced to the history and life of the Dr. Maria Montessori, her Theories, Philosophies and Method. Some topics treated under this Module include:

EXERCISES OF PRACTICAL LIFE

This module introduces the participant to the simple daily routines performed by adults in the environment. These daily activities are introduced to the child using same materials but provided in the size of the child.

All materials used for these practical life activities are strictly child sized.

These exercises are meant to satisfy the child’s strong urge to do things himself, encourage independence in the child, assist the child to develop love for work which also arouse internal happiness, and also promote self-satisfaction and self-respect. Topics treated under this Module include:

  • - Principles of the Exercises of Practical Life
  • - Presenting an Exercise
  • - Elementary Exercises
  • - Exercises of Personal Care
  • - Exercises of Grace and Courtesy
  • - Exercises of Care of Environment

EXERCISES OF SENSORIAL DEVELOPMENT

It is well established that the child is in the age of rapid development during the ages of 0 to 7 years.

It is established by Dr. Montessori that it is possible to sharpen the ability to use the senses of the child through the introduction to numerous activities.

This is made possible by providing the child the opportunity to have sensory interaction with the environment. These are achieved through introducing the participant to the following topics:

  • - Introduction to Exercises of Sensorial Development
  • - Principles of Montessori Materials
  • - The Three Period Lesson and Memory Game
  • - Exercises of Development of Visual Sense
  • - Exercises of Development of Auditory Sense
  • - Exercises of Development of Tactile Sense
  • - Exercises of Senses of Smell and Taste

LANGUAGE (PART 1) – LANGUAGE AND PHONICS EXERCISES

This Module provides a step by step guide and activities to assist the participant train the child to progress in phonics and also provide a plan to practice 44 phonic sounds of English language along with their 144 different alphabetic representations.

Participants are also trained in various activities to guide the child through three lettered phonetic words, longer phonetic words, high frequency words, phonogram words and eventually guide the child through total reading.

The Module also explains exercises meant to introduce the child to writing activity. Topics under this Module include:

  • - Introduction to Language Exercises
  • - Preparation for Writing with Insets for Design
  • - Exercises of Oral Language
  • - Learning to Read the Phonetic Way
  • - General Sound Discrimination
  • - Identifying Basic Phonemes and Graphemes
  • - Beginning to Read

LANGUAGE (PART 2) – HANDWRITING AND GRAMMAR EXERCISES

The module trains the participant to guide the child through various activities to enable him identify capital letters and the sequence of the alphabet.

Introduction to chalk boards and sorting exercises introduced alongside each other are meant to develop the child’s skill in writing.

Exercises to enable the child understand forms of speech using symbols and also understand the proper use of words in phrases and sentences are also introduced in the Module.

MATHEMATICAL EXERCISES (PART 1)

This Module trains the participant to use the numerous Montessori Math materials to help the child learn how to count, identify and associate quantities and numerals till ten.

The decimal system is also introduced in this Module mainly with the use of the Golden bead material.

The four mathematical operations (addition, multiplication, subtraction and division) are also introduced under this Module.

Exercises in linear counting group meant to enable the child count till hundred and then one thousand are also introduced in this Module.

The topics discussed are:

  • - The Four Operations with Golden Bead Material
  • - Linear Counting

MATHEMATICAL EXERCISES (PART 2)

Advance Montessori mathematics activities are introduced under this Module. Various exercises with the use of special and specific materials are used to prepare the child for more complex activities on the various topics discussed in the previous Model.

CULTURE 1 (GEOGRAPHY AND HISTORY)

In the Montessori Method, the cultural studies curriculum comprises of experiences in sciences (botany and zoology), physical sciences, history, geography (man-made and natural), arts, dance and music.

The cultural studies curriculum expose the child to the whole world and gives him the chance to experience it by getting detailed knowledge on the continents, countries, people, cultures, terrain, natural phenomena, science and arts.

Through these experiences, the child develops his personality, gains adaptation to his own culture and develop independence and contribute positively to his community.

The following topics are discussed under the Module 8, which mainly focuses on geography and history.
